Transgenders

People to hear...

Things to read...

•The Public Religion Research Institute finds Americans overwhelmingly support transgender equality in a 2011 survey.

•The Human Rights Campaign has a resource for transgenders and their loved ones designed to help work through the issues surrounding disclosure or coming out in realistic and practical terms. Access the Transgender Visibility Guide.

•The Human Rights Campaign has also created a resource on transgenderism and the social and legal challenges transgenders face, such as finding and keeping jobs, locating housing and using public accommodations, staying safe in their homes and communities, obtaining critical health care, securing legal documents consistent with their gender identity, having their relationships respected and protected, raising their children, safely attending school, and being treated fairly and humanely in the criminal justice system.  Download this resource here:  Transgender Americans: A Handbook for Understanding.

Delawarean Sarah McBride, a 21-year-old American University student already distinguished for political acumen and accomplishments, revealed her transgenderism and presented herself as a woman in the spring of 2012. In The Real Me she recounts her experience. (Since transitioning, Sarah has been very effective in trans advocacy, notably in the passage of Delaware's Gender Identity Nondiscrimination Act of 2013. In the below clip, she and her gay brother Sean address the Human Rights Campaign later that year.)
